Why does my ear produce wax?
- Ear wax is healthy in normal amounts and helps to protect and clean the ear canal
- Without ear wax, you may have dry and itchy ears
- Ear wax will slowly move out of your ear canal on its own time
Never use a Q-tip!
Ear wax is formed near the opening of the ear canal, not in the deep part of the ear canal near the eardrum.
Putting things such as q-tips, bobby pins, or a twisted napking in your ear can cause ear wax to block the ear canal. This can cause hearing loss.
If I should not use a Q-tip, how should I remove wax from my ears?
Use a wet washcloth on the outside of your ear. DO NOT INSERT ANYTHING INTO YOUR EAR CANAL.
Try placing a few drops of mineral oil, baby oil, glycerin, or commercial drops in your ear. These drops help soften the wax so it can travel out of your ear on its own.
Seek Treatment for Wax Removal if:
- You experience earache, fullness in your ear, or a feeling your is plugged
- You experience Partial hearing loss, which may get worse over time
- You experience Tinnitus, ringing, or noises in your ear
- You experience Itching, odor, or discharge
- You experience Coughing
