Did you know that once you lose your hearing, you can’t get it back? October is Hearing Protection Month and the Marion Downs Center remains committed to hearing health with audiology evaluations and hearing protection consultations.
5 in 10 young adults receive excessive noise exposure from music and other audio sources. The majority of adults over 60 years old are not able to hear high-pitched sounds. Hearing loss impacts millions of people in the United States.
MEASURING SOUND IN DECIBELS
We measure sound in decibels (dB), however the decibel scale is not linear. An increase of 10 dB represents a 10x increase in loudness while an increase of 20 dB means the sound is getting 100 times louder!
It only takes 1 minute of exposure at 120 dB to cause hearing damage versus 2 hours at 90 dB. It’s very important to protect your hearing in loud environments!
THE REALITY OF HEARING LOSS
1 out of 4 people who report good to excellent hearing already have hearing damage. It may take years before you notice your hearing loss.
Chronic noise exposure can lead to increased stress, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, heart disease, and many other health problems.
