Deaf Awareness Month: Modes of Communication

Poster about modes of communication

The deaf and hard of community is diverse with individuals who use a mix of communication modalities from signing to cueing to speaking as well as written language. Some are born deaf, and some lose their hearing later in life.

American Sign Language is a visual language in its own with different dialects and regional signs.

Cued American English was invented to complement American Sign Language and provide direct access to spoken language for literacy development.

With advances in hearing technology, children with hearing loss have more access to spoken language than ever.

The Marion Downs Center remains committed to providing inclusive and equitable services for deaf and hard of hearing individuals. To learn more or schedule an appointment, call us at 303-322-1871 or email us at [email protected]
